About this seal

In the United States a licensed Professional Engineer seals (stamps) engineering drawings, specifications and reports to take professional responsibility for them. The design is regulated by each state's engineering board: most require a round seal showing the state, the words Professional Engineer (or Licensed Professional Engineer), the engineer's name and license number, and some specify the diameter or the discipline. Many states now accept a digital seal paired with a certified digital signature on PDF sheets.

Common uses

  • Previewing a seal layout before ordering from an approved vendor
  • Title-block and sheet-template mock-ups
  • Training, coursework and sample drawing sets
  • Checking that a long name and license number fit the seal

How to create it

  1. Open the template — the round PE seal layout is pre-applied.
  2. Replace STATE OF SAMPLE with the state as your board requires it.
  3. Enter your name and license number exactly as licensed.
  4. Compare the layout with your board's seal rules (wording, size, discipline).
  5. Export a PNG or SVG for your mock-up or sheet template.

Frequently asked questions

Who can use a PE stamp?

Only an engineer holding an active Professional Engineer license in that state, and only on work performed under their responsible charge.

What does a PE stamp include?

Typically the state, “Professional Engineer”, the engineer's name and license number. Some boards add requirements such as the discipline, a fixed diameter or a signature and date beside the seal.

Can I use a digital PE seal on PDFs?

Many states accept an electronic seal image combined with a verifiable digital signature. Check your board's rules — an image alone is usually not enough.

Legal & usage

This template is for layout preview, training and sample drawings only. Only a licensed Professional Engineer may seal engineering documents, the seal must meet the state board's rules, and sealing documents without a license — or with someone else's seal — is illegal.
