About this seal

Justices of the Peace in Australia are volunteers appointed by each state and territory government. They witness statutory declarations and affidavits and certify copies of original documents, and they must not charge for it. When a JP signs, the people relying on the document need to be able to read who they are: JPs print or stamp their name, the words Justice of the Peace and — in states that number their JPs, such as New South Wales and Queensland — their registration number, which can be checked on the state JP register. A stamp is not compulsory; a clear handwritten block does the same job, but most JPs buy a self-inking stamp because they sign dozens of pages at a time. Queensland also appoints Commissioners for Declarations (C.dec), who have a narrower set of powers than a JP; the editor has a separate C.dec preset.

Common uses

  • Artwork to order a self-inking JP stamp
  • The identification block under a JP's signature on statutory declarations and affidavits
  • Certifying copies of passports, licences and academic records
  • Queensland Commissioner for Declarations (C.dec) stamps

How to create it

  1. Open the template — the rectangular JP layout is pre-applied.
  2. Replace JANE CITIZEN with your name as it appears on the JP register.
  3. Enter your JP registration number and your state or territory.
  4. Check the wording with your state's JP guidance and adjust the lines if needed.
  5. Export a transparent PNG, SVG or PDF to send to a stamp maker.

Frequently asked questions

Does a JP have to use a stamp?

No. A JP must make their name, capacity and (where their state issues one) registration number legible; a stamp is simply the most common way to do it.

What should a JP stamp say?

Usually the JP's name, the words Justice of the Peace (or the letters JP), the registration number and the state, for example New South Wales. Follow your own state's JP handbook if it prescribes wording.

Can a JP charge for witnessing or certifying?

No. JP services are free. If someone charges a fee, they are not acting as a JP.

Legal & usage

Stamps render in your browser for design and demonstration. Only a person currently appointed as a Justice of the Peace may use this wording: impersonating a JP or using a JP stamp on a document you did not witness is an offence. The stamp gives no authority by itself — the appointment and the signature do.
