About this seal

US notaries authenticate their notarial acts with an official seal, and in many states it can be a rectangular inked stamp rather than a round one. What it must contain is set by each state — commonly the notary's name exactly as commissioned, the words Notary Public, the state (and sometimes county), the commission number and the expiration date — and some states also fix its size, border or ink color. Notaries normally buy the physical stamp from an authorized vendor after showing their commission.

Common uses

  • Previewing a rectangular notary stamp layout before ordering
  • Training materials and notary course handouts
  • Mock-ups of acknowledgment and jurat certificates
  • Checking that a long name and commission line fit the frame

How to create it

  1. Open the template — the rectangular notary layout is pre-applied.
  2. Replace JANE A. DOE with the name exactly as it appears on the commission.
  3. Edit the state, commission number and expiration date lines.
  4. Check your state's rules for size, border and ink color.
  5. Export a PNG, SVG or PDF for your preview or training material.

Frequently asked questions

Can a notary stamp be rectangular?

In many states, yes — statutes often allow either a circular or a rectangular seal. Some states prescribe one shape or exact dimensions, so check your commissioning authority's rules.

What must a notary stamp include?

It varies by state, but typically the notary's name as commissioned, “Notary Public”, the state, the commission number and the commission expiration date.

Can I use this image as my electronic notary seal?

Not by itself. Electronic and remote notarization require state-approved platforms and digital certificates; this image is a design preview only.

Legal & usage

This template is for layout preview, training and demonstration only. Only a commissioned notary may use a notary seal, it must follow the state's statutory requirements, and many states require it to be obtained through an authorized vendor. Using a notary seal you are not commissioned for is a crime.
