In Japan a hanko (or inkan) is a personal or corporate seal used in place of a signature. A company's round seal, the maru-in, typically has the company name on the outer ring and 代表取締役之印 ("seal of the representative director") on the inner ring. The registered version, the jitsuin, is filed with the Legal Affairs Bureau and carries the strongest legal weight.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between jitsuin, ginkoin and mitomein?
The jitsuin is the registered seal with full legal weight, the ginkoin is registered with your bank, and the mitomein is an unregistered everyday seal. The editor includes templates for each.
What font should a hanko use?
Mincho is common and legible; tensho (seal script) and brush styles give a more traditional carved look. The editor offers Mincho, Gothic and brush fonts.
Legal & usage
Seals are rendered in your browser for design and demonstration only. A registered jitsuin must be carved and filed with the Legal Affairs Bureau — generated images are not a substitute and should only depict an entity you represent.
